Music in the Arcadia Curriculum

Aims within KS3

  • Students will have an introduction to music theory and literacy. These skills will be built upon each year, and will be put into practice during Instrumental & Ensemble Skills.
  • Students will begin ‘Instrumental Skills’ in Year 7 and they will learn the basic skills needed to play the keyboard, guitar, bass guitar, ukulele and drum kit, and will build on these skills throughout years 7 and 8.
  • Students will learn how to play as part of a band through our ‘Ensemble Skills’ unit.
  • Students will learn about composing techniques from how to compose a melody through to writing a full piece or song which will be recorded in year 9.
  • Students will learn about various instruments and styles of music throughout KS3 building a bank of concepts needed for GCSE Music.

Aims within KS4

  • Students will develop confidence to perform both in a solo and group setting.
  • Students will develop their own musicianship skills by learning pieces at minimum ABRSM Grade 4 level, and will learn to demonstrate technical control and musical coherence.
  • Students will learn to analyse music through listening and score reading.
  • Students will expand their composing skills and learn how to develop melodic ideas.
  • Students will gain an understanding and appreciation of music and its role in society.
  • Students will be prepared for further study in music or related fields.
